About
Mixtape Gameplay Criticism and Mixtape Overrated Backlash refer to online criticism that the 2026 narrative-driven video game Mixtape, which received widespread acclaim from several video game critics, is overrated and has bad gameplay. The game, which is inspired by 1980s coming-of-age films, was released on May 7th, 2026, and garnered mostly positive reviews from critics, including perfect scores from sites like IGN, DualShockers, Insider Gaming and more.
As the game and its positive review scores went viral online in early May 2026, it received backlash from some players, who criticized the game for being overhyped. One of the main criticisms of the game is that it "plays itself," meaning it is mostly cutscenes and features too little actual gameplay. Others criticized the writing and story, the concept in general and its reliance on nostalgia, and the critics themselves for rating it so highly or calling it "Game of the Year."
It was also assumed by some that the game received high scores for being woke and for being published by Annapurna Interactive, which is founded by Megan Ellison, daughter of billionaire Larry Ellison, suggesting the high reviews were paid for and astroturfed or that the title was an industry plant.
Background
On May 7th, 2026, the video game Mixtape, developed by Beethoven & Dinosaur and published by Annapurna Interactive, was released across consoles and PC. The game is inspired by '80s coming-of-age films, such as the movies of John Hughes, and is heavily reliant on its soundtrack full of licensed songs from artists including The Smashing Pumpkins, Portishead, The Cure, DEVO and more.
Mixtape follows a group of high school friends celebrating their last night before graduation. The game is meant to play like a "mixtape" of memories related to the characters and their relationships, offering players a host of different minigames throughout, such as a skateboard minigame, a kissing minigame in which the player controls two characters' tongues, a leaf raking minigame, a slushie-pouring minigame and more.
Mixtape received widespread acclaim from several video game critics and gaming journalism outlets, including perfect scores from several sites like IGN, GamingTrend, DualShockers and more. On Metacritic, the game holds an 85 percent positive aggregate score from critics and a 6.1 from users as of May 13th, 2026.
