Retired cop showing up to a dispute involving an active cop is one of those social dynamics that only fails when someone has their phone out with a timestamped email. Without that email this is a very different story. With it, the tone shift is immediate and the victimhood pivot happens just as fast. Suddenly the issue isn’t the pavilion he never paid for. Suddenly the issue is the language used by the person who paid for it.

The placard move is the detail that really commits to the portrait. Taking a spot is opportunistic. Moving the physical marker to cover your tracks and then feigning confusion is a rehearsed move. That is someone who has done a version of this before and knows that most people will back down rather than make a scene at a one-year-old’s birthday party.

The birthday happened anyway. Burgers, steak, smash cake, decorations, twenty people who showed up and watched a guy walk to the pavilion he could have used from the start, still visibly furious about losing an argument he manufactured himself.
