When a new technology comes about that we can't quite wrap our heads around, we try to understand it through the lens of fiction. It's why we have fiction in the first place. It helps us understand the world around us. We might not have alien invasions and intergalactic travel yet, but we might understand it a little bit better when we do, because we've spent so long preparing for it. But it's not only useful to think about the world to come, but it's also useful to understand our present moment. All work comes out of some particular time and space, even if it's pretending to be another. Star Wars came from a very specific time in American history, and it had a lot to say about geopolitics and the nature of power in its time, even if it was actually set in a galaxy "far, far away." This is why we love science fiction so much. It's relatable despite not being actually relatable.
