Due to her status as a television personality, as well as a generally contentious figure, Miller has been subject to various scandals and controversies, and is often subject to internet discourse.

Miller's demeanor on Dance Moms and other public appearances, coupled with her exaggerated behaviors and expressions, has led to numerous memes and viral videos of the choreographer spreading online, in addition to spawning countless reaction images and GIFS that have seen widespread use across the internet, particularly among Stan Twitter, TikTok and other online communities centered on discussing pop culture.

History

Abby Lee Miller, born September 21st, 1965, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, developed an interest in dance through her mother, Maryen Lorrain Miller, a former member of Dance Masters of America. Maryen previously operated several dance studios in Miami, Florida, before relocating to Pittsburgh, where she taught dance classes throughout the city and later opened a studio in Penn Hills.

In 1980, Miller founded the Abby Lee Dance Company (ALDC), a non-profit dance organization dedicated to training young dancers. The studio later became the focus of the Lifetime reality television series Dance Moms, an unscripted reality series centered on the competitive dance world which followed the experiences of competitive dancers and their mothers under Miller’s instruction.

Dance Moms premiered on July 13th, 2011. The series portrayed the physical, emotional, and financial pressures associated with competitive dance, with Miller’s uncompromising approach becoming a defining aspect of both her public image and the program itself. Miller later stated that the program was initially intended to focus primarily on the mothers rather than the dancers or choreography, and that she was not expected to play a major role. However, following the filming of several confrontational scenes, producers expanded her involvement.

The cast originally anticipated only six episodes, but the show’s success led Lifetime to order additional seasons and helped establish a large and dedicated following.

Reputation

Miller became known for her strict teaching methods and demanding expectations of her students. Her intense coaching style and harsh criticism frequently caused tension within the studio environment, often leading to emotional confrontations with both dancers and their mothers. She was also frequently accused by parents of showing favoritism toward certain students.

In 2015, Miller was charged with concealing approximately $775,000 in income earned from Dance Moms, Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition, and related projects during bankruptcy proceedings. She pleaded guilty to bankruptcy fraud in June 2016. Prosecutors also accused her of illegally transporting approximately $120,000 in Australian currency into the United States.

In May 2017, Miller was sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison, followed by two years of supervised release. She was also fined $40,000 and ordered to forfeit the undeclared funds. In July 2017, she reported to the Federal Correctional Institution in Victorville, California, to begin serving her sentence.
