TANJONG MALIM, Sept 28, 2025 – The joy of a Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) freshman on her registration day turned into grief when her elder brother suddenly passed away while driving from Seremban to Tanjong Malim yesterday morning.

In the incident around 6.30 a.m. at the Sungai Besi Toll Plaza, Kuala Lumpur, Nik Mohamad Syahrul Azzim Nik Yusoff (29), an alumnus of UPSI’s Game Design and Development Programme, Faculty of Computing and Meta-Technology (FKMT) in 2017, was reported to have lost consciousness while driving before collapsing onto his younger sister, Nik Nur Maisarah Nik Yusoff, who was seated in the front passenger seat.

Maisarah, who was on her way to register as a new student for the Information Technology programme at FKMT, managed to grab the steering wheel to avoid a collision at the toll plaza.

The vehicle, however, skidded off the road but both Maisarah and her sister, who was also in the car, escaped unhurt.

Nik Mohamad Syahrul Azzim was pronounced dead upon arrival at Serdang Hospital. A post-mortem revealed that he had died of sudden death syndrome, with no prior signs of illness.

His remains were brought back to Seremban for funeral prayers at Muhammad Al-Fateh Mosque before being laid to rest at Forest High Cemetery.

Meanwhile, UPSI Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Prof. Dr. Norkhalid Salimin, who visited the victim’s family, expressed the university’s deepest condolences over the tragedy.

“The university extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of the late alumnus. At UPSI, we remain committed to the welfare of our students and will continue to provide support and care during such difficult times,” he said.

Prof. Norkhalid also emphasised that UPSI is not only focused on academic excellence but also prioritises student welfare and emotional support, especially in situations involving the loss of a loved one.

“Student welfare is our top priority. Through the Student Affairs Unit, UPSI will continue to stay attentive and provide assistance to affected families and students,” he added.
