KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 — The final day of the 27th Grand Asian Chess Challenge (GACC) Championship held at the Auditorium of the Kompleks Perdana Siswa (KPS), Universiti Malaya (UM), here, was disrupted following an unexpected power outage early this morning.
The power outage, believed to have affected the entire UM campus, occurred at about 8.45 am during the final preparation phase before the first round commenced.
Tournament director Fabian Koay Kai Yao said the power disruption forced the match schedule for the Rapid Age Group category, originally set to begin at 9.00 am, to be postponed by one and a half hours.
“The matches had to be delayed until 10.30 am and only commenced after electricity supply was fully restored following prompt action by the building’s technical team and Tenaga Nasional Berhad,” he said when contacted today.
Despite the disruption, he said no matches were postponed to another day and all remaining rounds were successfully completed today.
More than 1,000 players from 12 countries, including Indonesia, Vietnam, China, India, Philippines and Malaysia took part in five categories of the championship, which was hosted by Second Residential College of Universiti Malaya. — Bernama
