Transport Ministry: JPJ to accept foreign licence conversion applications for Malaysians nationwide from June 1

PUTRAJAYA, May 7 — Malaysian citizens holding valid foreign driving licences with no restrictions may apply to convert them into Malaysian Driving Licences (LMM), subject to record checks and compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) set by the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

In a statement today, the Transport Ministry (MOT) said applications under the improved procedures can be made at all JPJ offices nationwide beginning June 1.

“The move is in line with current developments and aims to ensure the mobility of Malaysians working, residing or managing affairs abroad is not disrupted,” the ministry said.

Under the current policy, conversion of foreign driving licences to Malaysian licences is only allowed for Malaysians who obtained foreign driving licences before holding a Malaysian licence, participants of the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme and applicants under the diplomatic corps category.

MOT said the improvements were also intended to ensure driver licensing matters in the country comply with existing regulations and maintain applicants’ driving competency standards.

“It is also aimed at facilitating applications for the conversion of foreign driving licences to Malaysian licences by taking into account current needs and the mobility of Malaysians, especially amid the current challenging global and domestic economic environment,” it said.

The ministry said application requirements and procedures, including the fees involved, would be available on JPJ’s official website at www.jpj.gov.my beginning June 1. — Bernama
