  • Am I the bad guy for making my roommate pay me back immediately after he used my tuition money?

I live with two other guys near campus. We all split groceries and utilities pretty casually and usually just send each other money later without issues.

  • Last month my parents sent me part of my tuition money early and I kept it in my savings account because payment for the semester wasn't due yet. I mentioned this one night while we were all talking about classes and financial aid.

  • A week later I tried paying my tuition online and my card declined. I checked my account and almost $900 was gone.

  • I genuinely thought my bank got hacked until my roommate admitted he transferred the money to himself using my laptop because I had left my banking app logged in. He

  • said he was desperate because his car got impounded and he needed it back before work. The part that shocked me was he acted like this was some normal temporary loan between roommates.

  • He kept saying stuff like "relax, I was gonna return it after my next paycheck." I completely lost it and told him I wanted every dollar back by the end of the week or I'd report it. He

  • managed to borrow money from his brother and paid me back, but now the apartment is insanely awkward.

  • My other roommate says I escalated things too fast and should've handled it privately instead of threatening police over "roommate drama." But to me this wasn't borrowing. He literally logged into my account and took money without asking.

  • Asleep-Company9183 NTJ. That was straight up theft. He didn't "borrow" money. He accessed your banking account without permission, transferred himself almost $900, and only told you after you noticed. The fact that he planned to pay it back later doesn't make it okay.

  • Honestly, you were pretty restrained. You gave him a deadline instead of reporting him immediately. Your other roommate is focusing on the awkwardness instead of the fact that someone stole your tuition money. Change your passwords, log out of everything, enable 2FA, and don't leave your laptop unlocked around him again. I'd also seriously reconsider living with someone who thinks taking money from your account is a normal temporary loan.

  • WoedicaWinsWarframe ALL OF THIS. He shouldn't have been able to do that. My computer does have my username and password saved, BUT, I also have 2FA active, so it texts me a code when I log in. Always use 2FA on any site where money is involved. HI, even Facebonk, yesterday I got two or three passcodes emailed to me that I definitely did not request. Nice try hackers.
