Spike Jonze is putting his director’s eye on a different kind of frame.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker has teamed with Warby Parker on a limited-edition eyewear collection launching Sept. 1, reviving four of his favorite discontinued frames from the brand’s archives. Jonze has worn Warby Parker glasses for more than a decade and is a regular at the company’s Glendale, Calif., store. Last year, he approached the brand himself about collaborating, eventually landing on the idea of bringing back several sold-out styles he still wears.

The resulting lineup includes four optical and sunglass styles, with prices starting at $95: the Percey in Rose Crystal with Riesling, originally released in September 2018; Begley in Magnolia Green, first released in November 2020; Locke in Layered Cacao Crystal, a December 2021 style; and Yoojin in Brioche Tortoise with Riesling, which debuted in December 2022.

Jonze offers his own “director’s commentary” on each pair. Of the pink Percey frames, he recalls having lost several other versions before learning at the Glendale store that his surviving pair was rare. He gravitated toward Begley for its flat-top rim, while Locke appealed to him for a recessed lower rim and narrow arms that he says evoke “an Italian actor of the 1960s.” Yoojin, meanwhile, stood out because putting them on made him feel “so sophisticated,” like he had discovered “a little gem.”

Each pair arrives with a letter from the director and fluorescent heavy-duty stickers inspired by the handwritten gaffer’s-tape labels he uses to organize his own ever-expanding Warby Parker collection.

For the campaign, Opening Ceremony co-founder Humberto Leon photographed five people from Jonze’s orbit — skater and artist Jerry Hsu, model Jane Moseley, filmmakers Skylar-Bree Takyi and Henry Zumbrunnen and Leon’s mother, Wendy — wearing the revived frames along with actual clothes pulled from Jonze’s closet.

Leon’s involvement also reconnects Jonze with one of his longest-running relationships in fashion. In 2009, Opening Ceremony released a collection tied to Jonze’s “Where the Wild Things Are,” translating the film’s creatures into faux-fur coats, vests and an adult-sized version of Max’s white hooded suit. The retailer later created a capsule inspired by the distinctive high-waisted trousers, color-blocked shirts and jackets of Jonze’s “Her.”

The relationship became even more intertwined with Opening Ceremony’s runway presentations. Jonze and Jonah Hill wrote “100% Lost Cotton,” a one-act play that replaced the brand’s traditional Spring 2015 fashion show, with Jonze directing a cast that included Elle Fanning, Catherine Keener, Rashida Jones and Bobby Cannavale. For Opening Ceremony’s Fall 2015 menswear collection, Jonze opened his personal archive of skate, BMX and behind-the-scenes photography, which Leon and Carol Lim turned into clothing prints featuring everything from skaters to stills from the Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage” video. He later wrote and directed the brand’s 2017 theatrical presentation “Changers,” starring Lakeith Stanfield and Mia Wasikowska.

More recently, Jonze has returned to fashion from behind the camera. Earlier this year, he wrote and directed “Shape of Dreams,” the surreal campaign film starring Zendaya for her first co-created apparel and footwear collection with On and stylist Law Roach. The project went on to win a Gold Lion and two Silver Lions at the 2026 Cannes Lions festival.
