A South Korean court has fined a woman who repeatedly punched a man after discovering he was secretly filming her in a women’s restroom.

According to the ruling, the incident occurred in December 2024 at a building in Changwon. The woman, identified only as being in her 40s, allegedly caught a man in his 20s secretly recording her while she was using the restroom. Enraged, she reportedly struck the man in the face multiple times.

However, the court ultimately found her guilty of assault and imposed a fine of ₩300,000 KRW (about $199 USD). What has drawn even more attention is the background of the male victim.

The court revealed that the man had previously been convicted under South Korea’s sexual violence laws for illegal filming and distribution-related offenses. At the time of the incident, he was reportedly serving a suspended sentence after receiving 1 year and 2 months in prison, suspended for 3 years, for a separate hidden-camera crime.

During the trial, the woman denied assaulting him, but the court determined the assault had occurred. The judge noted that the man consistently testified about being assaulted while simultaneously admitting to secretly filming the woman.

The court also pointed out that because he was already on probation and desperately needed a favorable outcome from the victim, it would have been unlikely for him to fabricate the assault allegations. According to the ruling, the woman allegedly blocked the restroom exit with her leg and punched the man in the face approximately 15 to 17 times.

The court ruled that the level of force exceeded what could be considered self-defense or a socially acceptable act of protection.

The case has sparked intense debate online, with many netizens questioning whether someone who catches a repeat hidden-camera offender in the act should face punishment for retaliating in the heat of the moment.
