At its core, this film is a wild ride, filled with rave culture, local shenanigans, and a whole lot of heart.
Background & Context
Skintown is an adaptation of Ciarán McMenamin's 2018 novel of the same name, brought to life by director Kieron J. Walsh. The film follows two young men, Vinny and Jonty, as they navigate the complexities of provincial life in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland. The story is set against the turbulent history of Ireland, with the Troubles looming large in the background.
This is a story that's long overdue – a chance for Northern Irish people to see themselves reflected on the big screen. As Kieron J. Walsh notes, "This hasn't been explored before: ordinary people, living in the crossfire, [and] young people trying to live normal lives." Skintown promises to be a game-changer in the world of Northern Irish cinema, offering a fresh perspective on a complex and often misunderstood era.
Key Details
At its heart, Skintown is a story about two young men trying to make their way in the world. Vinny, played by Jack Rowan, is a lovable rogue with a heart of gold. His best friend Jonty, played by Chris Walley, is equally as charming, and together they form the perfect duo. But as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that their lives are not as simple as they seem.
With a talented supporting cast, including Jamie-Lee O'Donnell and Hope Ikpoku Jr., Skintown is a film that promises to deliver on all fronts. From its vibrant portrayal of 1990s rave culture to its nuanced exploration of the Troubles, this film is a must-see for anyone interested in Northern Irish history and culture.
But what really sets Skintown apart is its unique production history. The film was originally set to star Anthony Boyle, but due to production delays, Rowan was brought in to take on the role. According to Walsh, "It was a bumpy ride," but ultimately, the change worked in their favor. As Rowan notes, "The beauty of that is, when Anthony had the part, it was his right. I was never in the picture." This serendipitous casting change has resulted in a film that is truly one-of-a-kind.
