It took a little while, but Inde Navarrette’s post-Obsession career is slowly coming into focus.
On the heels of the newly-minted starlet’s casting as Rogue in Marvel’s upcoming X-Men feature, the actress is attached to star in The Waffle House Index, a sci-fi thriller package just picked up by Apple Original Films. And in a first for Navarrette, she will also exec produce the project.
Plan B Entertainment is producing Waffle House, which has a screenplay by Andrew Nunnelly. Louis Paxton, whose Sundance Film Festival NEXT Innovator Award-winning The Incomer hits theatres later this month, is on board to direct. Sources say the deal for the script was seven figures.
The Waffle House Index is an informal barometer of a hurricane’s severity. The levels are based on how much service an area’s Waffle House, a chain that basically operates 24/7, is offering. Green means the restaurant is in full service mode and the damage isn’t severe; yellow means a limited menu, indicating low food supplies; and red is just bad news, a closed restaurant and a sign of unsafe conditions.
Nunnelly’s script, which was featured on the 2025 Black List, centers on a Waffle House waitress whose already bad day gets worse when a stranger with a gun shows up during her night shift. What happens after involves a mass flood, killer crocodiles, a nuclear explosion, a magical bunker under the Waffle House, and aliens.
Waffle House becomes the latest Plan B-Apple collaboration as the production company, led by Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, was one the entities behind Pitt racing drama F1. Plan B also recently produced the arty horror movie Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma and is prepping to shoot the Sarah Polley-directed drama, The Bell Jar.
Navarrette’s breakout role in Curry Barker’s horror hit Obsession has gone from discovery of Hollywood’s new It Girl to talk of Oscar nomination. The movie has grossed over $505 million worldwide, earned universal critical acclaim and became a pop culture phenomenon. Navarrette’s character is now featured Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios. The actress shot to the top of Hollywood’s list of most wanted and had been in the mix of several high-profile features, although she had been cautious and calculated about her next career moves.
The actress previously appeared on Netflix’s fourth and final season of 13 Reasons Why and had a key role in The CW’s Superman & Lois.
As one source said, “Apple is the ultimate star-driven studio so this is a sign of how big a star Inde Navarrette is now.”
