Did he go too far? He was only trying to defend his son from her patronizing comments.

You never want to become someone who can never be told that they're wrong. Once you reach that station in life, it becomes difficult to learn and grow as a person. People often point to George Lucas's return to directing the Star Wars prequels. Those films were so hyped, and the fan base was so ready to see more, and yet the movies didn't turn out so great. Many people theorize that George Lucas was so powerful that he could do whatever he wanted in those movies, and the result was mediocre. After all, he created Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Anyone working on those three movies had less power than he did, and although we weren't on those sets, we might venture to think that a lower-level writer or producer might not feel comfortable telling George Lucas that his ideas are bad. And thus, the bad ideas eventually became bad movies.

Normal people can become unwilling to accept that they're wrong, even if they have no real reason to be so haughty. Maybe they've been told they're wrong when they aren't one too many times. It can be frustrating to feel like everyone is always trying to tell you that you're wrong, and you might want to overcorrect when you feel confident that you are right. This is a problem that teachers often face. They know they're right, but they have spoiled, entitled kids telling them they're wrong all day.
