KUCHING, Oct 28 — Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will contest all 82 state seats in Sarawak’s 13th state election.
Sarawak Premier and GPS chairman Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg said the decision was reached following a meeting with the presidents of the coalition’s component parties today.
“We do not yet know the election date as it will be determined by the Election Commission (EC). However, GPS is ready,” he told reporters after chairing the GPS Supreme Leadership Council meeting here.
Abang Johari said the coalition would await the EC’s announcement of the election dates before deciding its next course of action.
On seat allocations among GPS component parties, he said detailed discussions would be held based on the seats currently held by each party.
On October 23, Abang Johari announced the dissolution of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly, effective October 26, to pave the way for the state election.
The EC is scheduled to hold a special meeting on November 6 to determine key election dates and discuss related matters.
In the 12th state election on December 18, 2021, GPS secured 76 of the 82 seats contested, while Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) won four and DAP two.
However, Sarawak’s political landscape changed following PSB’s dissolution in 2024, when three of its former assemblymen joined the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP), a GPS component party, while another one opted to become an independent.
GPS comprises Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and PDP. — Bernama
