I Play Rocky, Peter Farrelly’s rousing crowd-pleaser about Sylvester Stallone and the making of the 1976 classic film Rocky, has been submitted by distributor Amazon/MGM for Golden Globes consideration as a musical/comedy, rather than a drama, The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively learned.

It’s a somewhat surprising move, given that I Play Rocky has some funny moments, but has not been advertised as a comedy, and that Rocky itself competed at the Globes as a drama.

Assuming the classification is okayed by the Golden Globes organization, the film will compete in the genre-specific Globes categories — picture, actor and actress — against the likes of Wild Horse Nine, The Invite, The Debut, Artificial, Obsession, Project Hail Mary and Tender Loving Care, rather than The Odyssey, La Bola Negra, Dune: Part Three, Elsinore, Club Kid, All of a Sudden, Fjord and Possible Love.

Ippolito will be vying for a best actor in a musical/comedy against the likes of John Malkovich (Wild Horse Nine), Ryan Gosling (Project Hail Mary), Tom Cruise (Digger), Yura Borisov (Artificial), Seth Rogen (The Invite), Alexander Skarsgård (Wicker) and Brad Pitt (The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth), rather than Andrew Scott (Elsinore), Matt Damon (The Odyssey), Robert Pattinson (Primetime), Timothée Chalamet (Dune: Part Three), Jordan Firstman (Club Kid), Sebastian Stan (Fjord), John Turturro (The Only Living Pickpocket in New York), Jaafar Jackson (Michael) and Pedro Pascal (Behemoth!).

THR recently broke the news of three other high-profile Globes categorizations: Obsession as a musical/comedy, Artificial as a musical/comedy and Club Kid as a drama.
