‘Gargoyles’ Live-Action Series Not Moving Forward at Disney+

The live-action “Gargoyles” reboot has turned to stone.

The project, which was in early development at Disney+, is no longer moving forward, a source confirms to Variety.

The streamer was working with writer Gary Dauberman and James Wan’s Atomic Monster to develop a live-action version of the beloved Disney animated series, which aired from 1994 to 1997.

Rumors that the reboot was not moving forward originated from an interview by ComicsOnline with Greg Weisman, co-creator of the original series. “That’s dead,” Weisman said when asked about the Disney+ project. “I have no idea about animation, but there are no current plans for live-action.” Weisman was not directly involved in the live-action reboot, but a source close to the project confirmed its status to Variety.

Dauberman (“It”) would have served as writer and executive producer of “Gargoyles” 2.0 with Wan also executive producing. Disney Branded Television was attached as the studio. The logline for the project read: “Based on the cult classic Disney animated series, Goliath is the last of a heroic race of gargoyle warriors who once lived among mankind. Free from a centuries long curse that turned him into stone, Goliath struggles to solve the mystery of his past while watching over modern-day New York City alongside police detective Elisa Maza.”

The original “Gargoyles” hailed from Walt Disney Television Animation and was considered dark for the Mouse House. The show followed a fantastical species known as gargoyles, who are made of stone during the day but come alive at night. When a clan of gargoyles living in Scotland in the late 10th century are betrayed and cursed by a magic spell, they cannot break from their stone sleep until a thousand years later in modern New York, thanks to the intervention of a wealthy industrialist named David Xanatos. The gargoyles decide to claim New York as their new home and vow to protect it.

The voice cast of the show included Keith David, Salli Richardson, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, Ed Asner, Thom Adcox-Hernandez, Jeff Bennett and Bill Fagerbakke. It aired for three seasons in the 1990s, with the final season retitled “Gargoyles: The Goliath Chronicles.”

“Gargoyles” had a strong cult following, and there have been various rumors and attempts to bring the series back to life over the years. None have ever come to fruition.
