• However, it is wise to be a little cautious when speaking in another tongue, especially if it happens to be a somewhat common one. You never know who might be understanding every word you say, even if they look like they have never so much as set foot in another country. Plenty have been tripped up because they have said something that they shouldn't have in front of somebody who they assumed would have no idea what they are talking about. 

  There is no doubt it is embarrassing to get caught out for something that you have said, no matter what language you are speaking. The most important thing is to accept your mistake with grace and move on with it if that is possible.

• One man found himself in an awkward position at work with his colleagues, who frequently spoke Spanish around him with the assumption that he did not understand what they were saying. He didn't bring up the fact that he was also fluent, as he felt like he never had the right opportunity to do so.

  The illusion was maintained until one day, he laughed at the way one of his coworkers talked about something he had said in a meeting.
