KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 3 — This weekend could feel like a long one for Malaysians in the capital — not because of a string of public holidays, but the sheer number of events expected to clog up roads across the Klang Valley.

The days ahead will feature a flurry of sporting, cultural and musical events, with several taking place simultaneously.

Malay Mail breaks down some of the biggest events taking place in and around KL this weekend:

The biggest crowd-puller is the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, which got under way at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) yesterday and continues until tomorrow (October 4).

Formula 1 is returning to Malaysia for the first time in nine years, with Sepang stepping in to host the race after the Bahrain Grand Prix was cancelled earlier this season amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

Some 22 drivers will take to the Sepang circuit, including 12 who will be competing there for the first time, according to Reuters.

Daily crowds are expected to surpass 100,000, with Sunday’s finale tipped to draw a record number of spectators.

Traffic diversions will be taking place on several roads leading to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) from 8am to 11pm daily until October 4.

Some 822 police officers will be stationed at eight checkpoints around KLIA and the SIC including Bulatan Masjid, Jalan KLIA S8 and Persiaran Teknologi 1 & 2.

KLIA has also advised race-goers to use the Express Rail Link (ERL) or e-hailing services to arrive at the airport.

Free shuttle bus services will be provided for the F1 spectators from KLIA Terminal 2, KLIA Long Term Car Park and Mitsui Outlet Park KLIA.

Le Tour de Langkawi

Another major sporting event affecting the Klang Valley is the Le Tour de Langkawi 2026, which is now in its final leg.

The eight-stage race will culminate when riders race from Muar to the finish line in front of the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya on Sunday.

During that last stretch, a massive traffic jam is expected to occur at Putrajaya, MEX Highway and the ELITE Highway on Sunday afternoon.

The annual Standard Chartered Kuala Lumpur Marathon 2026 will also get under way with the 5km and 10km races today, while the full and half marathons will take place on Sunday.

A series of staggered road closures began at 8pm last night, starting with Jalan Raja and Dataran Merdeka.

Other affected roads include Jalan Raja, Jalan Raja Laut, Jalan Dang Wangi, Jalan Munshi Abdullah, Jalan Ampang, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan P. Ramlee, Jalan Raja Chulan, Jalan Kuching, Jalan Kinabalu and Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin.

Three key highways — the AKLEH, MRR2 and the northbound DUKE Highway towards Jalan Duta — will also be shut from 11pm today until 11am on Sunday.

The annual event, organised by Base Malaya Ventures, began yesterday and will run until Sunday.

The day jumps will take place between 8.30am and 6pm but the highlight will be the night jumps starting from 8pm to 10pm, which will feature illuminated canopy stunts.

Alongside the Le Tour de Langkawi grand finale, culture and colour will also take centre stage in Putrajaya as the 12-day Citrawarna Speed Festival comes to a close on Sunday.

The F1 fever from nearby SIC will also spill over, with automotive exhibitions and racing simulator sessions accompanying cultural shows at the 101 City Mall Putrajaya, KLIA Terminal 1 and the Sama-Sama Hotel.

Today, some 1,500 dancers and cultural performers in traditional costumes will take part in a massive parade from the Le Meridien Hotel to Moxy Hotels at IOI City Mall.
