The accused, “A,” a Chinese man in his 30s, was brought to Korea from Bangkok, Thailand, by the Ministry of Justice in cooperation with the National Police Agency on May 13. This extradition follows that of an accomplice, “B,” who was also brought back to Korea and indicted in August of last year.

This crime syndicate allegedly operated globally, and between August 2023 and April 2025, hacked into government, private, and public information of wealthy individuals, which included BTS’s Jungkook and the chairman of a major conglomerate. Using this stolen data, this group allegedly opened mobile phone accounts under the victims’ names and breached their bank and cryptocurrency accounts. In total, this sophisticated cybercrime network targeted 16 individuals, embezzling around ₩38.0 billion KRW (about $25.5 million USD).

According to reports, the crime ring stole Jungkook’s HYBE shares worth ₩8.40 billion KRW (about $5.63 million USD). However, his agency took immediate steps to freeze the assets and prevented any real financial loss.

In August of last year, the Cyber Investigation Division of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency apprehended two other ringleaders along with 16 syndicate members operating both domestically and abroad.
