Dumbledore was out of line for that.
There are some elements of the Harry Potter series that are so important and prominent in the first couple of entries, but seem to disappear as the story progresses. In Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, earning and losing house points and subsequently winning the house cup are given the utmost importance. As the series goes on, house points matter less and less. Maybe that's because the characters have to deal with much more important things than a behavioral context. Losing the house cup feels a lot less important when Voldemort could literally come back at any moment.
There's a distinct possibility that the house cup was less important because everyone got so angry that Gryffindor won the house cup in the first book, despite Slytherin "earning it." I do not agree with this outrage. Harry, Ron, and Hermione stopped Voldemort when they were literal first years. Who else could've done that? He might've been in a weakened state, but I didn't see Draco, Crabbe, and Goyle doing that. If you think Gryffindor deserved to win the house cup every year that Harry Potter attended Hogwarts, these might just be the memes for you.
