He might be the rightful owner of the doll, but his sister will not understand.
If you've ever been lucky enough to own an American Girl Doll, you know that it's not something to be taken lightly. Those dolls have been at least $100 since the 20th century, and they're not the kind of toys that you should just give to a toddler to use as they wish. American Girl Dolls have names and identities! They are for a sensitive older child who can understand that Felicity isn't just a girl with red hair and green eyes…she's a warrior for animals who is willing to break the law to keep them safe. If a child can't grasp the gravity of Julie's parents divorce, then they aren't old enough to play with American Girl Dolls.
Many families break the recommendation that their kids shouldn't get an American Girl Doll until their 8 years old or older. They are either rich enough to buy a brand new Samantha doll when their youngest "accidentally" rips her arms off, or they're careless enough not to care when she gets torn to shreds. There is literally an American Girl Doll Hospital for the expressed purpose of repairing dolls who got in the hands of irresponsible kids who couldn't properly take care of them. The most responsible doll collectors never want to get to the place where their doll has to go to such an institution.
