“100+ Victims…” — Famous Films’ Producer’s Short Sentence For Child Sex Abuse Sparks International Outrage

The arrest and sentencing of Japanese producer Koichiro Ito have recently surfaced online.

Koichiro Ito is the producer who runs a massive production company in Tokyo, Japan. Several projects he was involved in are internationally known and beloved, including the animated films “Your Name”  and “Suzume.”

In a viral post on X, the OP claimed that Ito had received a sentence of four years despite engaging in prostitution with 100 minors, which is rape. The post also stated that the crimes took place over a period of 11 years, and that he had met his victims on X.

The viral post currently has over 5 million views, with netizens expressing outrage over the alleged circumstances.

While the basis of the post is true, there are some inaccuracies to note.

The producer was arrested on February 21, 2024, for child prostitution and child pornography. In initial reports, it was stated that he met a 15-year-old on social media and forced her to send him nude images. This discovery was made during another investigation of child prostitution.

During the investigation, it was found that Ito had corresponded with over 100 people over an 11-year time period, with some indicated as minors, though an exact figure was not given and recorded the sexual experiences.

Prosecutors requested a six year sentence for 11 cases of child prostitution, 9 cases of photographing sexual poses, 10 cases of producing child pornography, 1 case of non-consensual intercourse involving one case of child prostitution, and possession of five pieces of child pornography.

So while the definitive number of underage victims is unknown, the number of child sexual exploration charges alone justifies the current response.
