Origin
On July 1st, 2019, YouTuber Annoying Orange uploaded a video titled, "Try Not to Cry Challenge #2." In the video, Little Apple and Grapefruit compete in a "try not to cry" challenge, where they try to make each other cry. Little Apple shows Grapefruit the same sad commercial three times, making him cry each time. The commercial shows kittens as a voice sings, "Baby kittens, without mommies." The video gained over 4.9 million views in seven years.
On March 4th, 2026, TikToker @cottoncandyfun1 posted the end of the Annoying Orange video, where Grapefruit is convinced to call and adopt the kittens after seeing the commercial for a third time, garnering over 1.5 million views in a month.

The audio for @cottoncandyfun1's upload was used over 3,200 times throughout March and April 2026 as TikTokers began using the Baby Kittens Without Mommies segment for memes.
On March 29th, 2026, TikToker @xmedievaltupx posted a meme that displays the audio as a text conversation, garnering over one million views in a month.
This became a common trend with the audio going forward, where a different character is displayed texting Grapefruit's dialogue from the video.
