Origin
The "What Does He Even Do?" image originated as a thumbnail for a YouTube video uploaded on June 23rd, 2017, by the channel @BlackySpeakz. The video, titled "What does DJ Khaled ACTUALLY DO?" discusses DJ Khaled's role (or lack thereof) in the music production process. As of April 2026, the video has received over 3 million views.
Spread
The image quickly gained significant traction as an exploitable, predominantly edited to include fictional characters and athletes. The image's wide applicability, as well as its obvious messaging, made it an effective way to call someone "useless" or otherwise unimpressive.
Edits featuring various athletes began surfacing on X / Twitter sometime in 2022, with users using the exploitable to slander various players for poor performance.
On January 12th, 2024, Reddit user u/Faithlessness_Tall posted an edited version of the image featuring Megumi Fushiguro from the anime/manga series Jujutsu Kaisen to r/Jujutsufolk. Though the post did not gain much traction, it showcases an early/typical use of the exploitable.
As the meme has continued to spread over the years, internet users have returned to the original video to express their gratitude to @BlackySpeakz for making the iconic thumbnail.
