About

Crazy Squidward, also known as Tweaking Squidward or Squidward Going Crazy, is a reaction image, GIF and exploitable meme depicting a manic-looking Squidward Tentacles from SpongeBob SquarePants that gained traction on sites like Reddit and X / Twitter before spreading to TikTok in late 2025 and early 2026. The scene of Squidward looking excessively crazed is typically used to convey a frantic, overwhelmed or unhinged emotion in response to a situation. The moment is sometimes used as a simple reaction with a caption, but it is also used as an exploitable to edit Squidward into other scenes.

Origin

The moment with Squidward losing his mind is taken from the SpongeBob SquarePants episode “Squid’s Day Off,” which is episode 21b of season 2 and originally aired on November 2nd, 2000. In the scene, Squidward Tentacles is shown in a distressed, wide-eyed state as he frantically locks and boards up the front door of his home.

According to a reverse image search on Tineye, the original, unedited scene depicting the crazy-looking Squidward first appeared in as a reaction image in a caption meme on July 26th, 2016, posted to the subreddit /r/BikiniBottomTwitter with the text, "when you didn't take the chicken out of the freezer but yo mom on her way home now." However, the post is no longer active. It was then used on iFunny in early October 2016 in a similar meme with a caption.

It was then sporadically used on various sites, primarily as a simple reaction image, during the late 2010s until reappearing in 2020 and becoming more prominently used in memes.

For example, on September 28th, 2020, Redditor neinsk posted an example to the /r/BikiniBottomTwitter subreddit referencing the COVID-19 pandemic, garnering over 11,000 upvotes and 50 comments in roughly six years.
