Being falsely accused of something is a terrible feeling.
Nobody wants to have to work to prove they're innocent. If you're innocent, then you probably get pretty frustrated when anyone else assumes that you're not. And it can be a very difficult thing to work against that assumption. Once someone has made their mind up about you, it's incredibly hard to get them to change their mind. Even with something innocuous. But if you're an upstanding person, which I'm sure you are, then it will eat at you when someone thinks something about you that isn't true. Even if the logical thing would be to move on and forget about it, it might stay with you for a long time. Nobody wants to be misunderstood, and it can feel like a pit in your stomach when someone does misunderstand you.
This can be especially true at work, where there are consequences for being misunderstood. If someone thinks of you as a different kind of worker than you are, then it might have real ramifications in your career. You might miss out on opportunities and chances to advance if your manager thinks you're slacking off. Even if you're not slacking off. That's why appearances and communication are just as important in a work setting as actual actions. If you're doing the right thing but nobody can see it, then you might not get to reap the benefits of that action, even if you should.
