A strange new method of getting your toddler to stop crying is going viral on social media, and all you have to do is say the name "Jessica."

The so-called "Jessica trend" has been spreading across sites like TikTok and Instagram Reels since the end of March and it's still blowing minds as parents wonder who exactly Jessica is and why her name stops tantrums.

So, why does saying "Jessica" stop toddlers from crying? Here's what we know.

What Is The 'Jessica Trend?'

The Jessica trend first popped up on TikTok near the end of March 2026. One of the earliest people to document the trend was TikToker @krislynakuhn, whose video gained over 12 million views in under a month.

In the video, the mother's crying daughter wanders up to her. Instead of addressing the daughter, she acts like there's someone named Jessica in the room. This gives the toddler pause, immediately stopping the tears.

From there, other TikTokers had to try the trend for themselves. Shockingly, saying "Jessica" in a concerned tone has worked for many, resulting in a ton of videos with millions of views showing off the trick.

@krislynakuhn I don’t think we will ever find this Jessica because she literally started playing after this like no tantrum even happened😂 #toddlermom #toddlertantrums #tantrums #funnytoddler #relatablemom ♬ Tchaikovsky "Dance of the Reed Flutes"(1257471) – kzy

How Does The 'Jessica Trend' Work?

The Jessica trend's virality is undeniable. It's now showing up across social media and getting traditional media attention as people try and determine why toddlers stop talking when they hear "Jessica."

A child therapist gave their opinion to HuffPost in mid-April, claiming that the name doesn't actually have anything to do with it. Rather, it's the tone of voice and concern that causes toddlers to stop crying.

She was quoted as saying, "[…] an abrupt shift, such as shouting ‘Jessica,’ disrupts the brain activity. It’s like a reset for their little nervous systems. Sometimes all we need is a break, even just for a few seconds, to help us reregulate."
