Across mobile, PC and console platforms, the video game industry is estimated to reach $213.9 billion in revenue this year — and the highly anticipated November release of “Grand Theft Auto VI” is a major reason why.

According to gaming industry market research firm Newzoo‘s “Global Games Market Report 2026,” gamers are eager to return to Vice City: the game tops the “adventure” genre on pre-order revenue alone, months ahead of its November launch.

Meanwhile, Sony’s PlayStation is leading the reacceleration in console player growth, while the decline in sales of Nintendo’s original Switch device offsets most of the net gain from the growing Switch 2 install base. Without “GTA 6,” Newzoo says console revenue would be expected to decline year over year.

The report suggests that as the video game market matures, growth depends less on new titles and new players and more on how long the hits and the audiences around them can be sustained. Per the research, “Grand Theft Auto V” still ranks among the top-selling video game titles, 13 years after release.

Among the 3.7-billion-gamer community analyzed in Newzoo’s data, Gez Z remains the prevailing audience on PC in 2026 while Gen Alpha is the demographic growing the most quickly and expanding their share of the PC player base.

See below for Newzoo’s own highlighted findings from “Newzoo’s Global Games Market Report 2026.” Read the report in full here.

  • PlayStation is leading the reacceleration in console player growth, while the decline of the original Switch offsets most of the net gain from the growing Switch 2 install base. Without Grand Theft Auto VI, console revenue would be expected to decline year-over year.
  • Most established live-service and evergreen titles were flat or down year over year in the first half 2026. Revenue gains were concentrated among a smaller group of standouts, including World of Warcraft, Diablo IV, Overwatch, Roblox and Tencent’s international titles.
  • Memory prices have increased sharply since January 2025, roughly 3.3 times for DDR4 and five times for DDR5, creating a significant near-term risk for PC gaming.
