About

"The King in Yellow" Minecraft ARG refers to a character inspired by a 1895 "weird-horror" anthology book by Robert W. Chambers, in which a fictional play featuring an entity referred to as "the Stranger" and a "Yellow Sign" drives readers mad. The "King in Yellow" experienced a resurgence in popular culture in the 2020s, following a series of horror-themed videos that adapted the character. Notably, YouTuber Wifies posted a Minecraft themed horror ARG (alternate reality game) titled "Searching For A World That Doesn’t Exist," where a player named Avery encounters the King in Yellow. The video inspired fan art and numerous fan-made TikToks in November 2025.

Origin

Precursors

The King in Yellow is the title of a collection of weird-horror short stories by Robert W. Chambers, first published in 1895. The first four stories are connected by a cursed fictional play named "The King in Yellow," and feature themes like "Carcosa" and a "Yellow" sign that drives readers mad. The King in Yellow has been repeatedly referenced in pop culture, with HBO's True Detective using "Carcosa", the "Yellow King", and ritualistic yellow symbology as metaphors for cosmic evil and corruption.
