Almost every married person thinks that their marriage won't be one of the ones that end badly.
Statistically speaking, though, there are no guarantees that this is going to be true. Even relationships that seem solid from the outside can dissolve for the most unexpected of reasons, and few ever see it coming. Unromantic as it may be, it is wise to keep that in mind when you commit to somebody.
Still, telling somebody you want to marry or even who you are already married to that you want some extra legal protections can easily be taken the wrong way. Nobody likes to think that their spouse is preoccupied more with the worst-case scenario than building a healthy relationship together. The sensible option is not always the one that feels good, and occasionally, it could end up being a bad deal that is presented as something reasonable.
As a result, it is important to present these kinds of options with care. They may seem like common sense to one person, and a potential trap to the other. The only way to find out if there is a way to make it work is to talk it through in detail, which you would hope to be able to do with somebody that you want to spend your life with anyway.
