Shudder Acquires Supernatural Horror Movie ‘Sundown’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Horror streamer Shudder has acquired the rights to “Sundown,” a new supernatural horror feature from director Rebekah McKendry, Variety can exclusively reveal.

According to an official logline, “‘Sundown’ follows three generations of women who reunite in a remote cabin to avenge a loved one’s death, only to discover their captive isn’t who he seems to be, and his family is closing in, waiting for sundown.”

“Sundown” stars Olwen Fouéré (“The Watchers,” “Mandy”), Camille Sullivan (“Shelby Oaks”), Summer H. Howell (“Carrie”), Daniel Bernhardt (“The Matrix Reloaded,” “Nobody 2”) and David Alpay (“From”). Supporting cast members include Kyle Mac (“Reacher”), Elisa Paszt (“Monica’s News”), David Ian McKendry, Junko Bailey (“The Grudge”) and Megan Best (“Elevator Game”).

“The town in ‘Sundown’ feels very much like the hometown of my youth, and its family squabbles are ones I know all too well,” McKendry said in a statement. “I am both a daughter and a mother, and this film allowed me to explore female relationships inspired by my own life while celebrating my deep love of ’80s vampire movies. Add monsters, revenge, and a sharp dose of acerbic wit, and this became a passion project for me. Even while trudging through two feet of snow in temperatures as low as -40 degrees, our cast, crew, and producers never stopped giving this film everything they had.”

Joshua Hull and David Ian McKendry, who previously collaborated with McKendry on her 2022 feature “Glorious,” wrote the screenplay for “Sundown.”

Guns N’ Roses’ Slash serves as executive producer under his BeserkerGang label. Producers include Pasha Patriki of Hangar 18 Media, alongside Raven Banner’s Michael Paszt, Andrew Thomas Hunt, and James Fler.

“’Sundown’ is ferocious, smart and completely unafraid to have a great time with horror,” said Mark Ward of IFC Entertainment Group. “Rebekah yet again proves that she can sustain a killer tone that balances brutal thrills and genuine supernatural menace, delivering the kind of wild ride that stays with you. We knew immediately that this was a film Shudder audiences would embrace.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by Ward on behalf of Shudder with Michael Paszt of Raven Banner on behalf of the filmmakers.
