MIRI, Oct 1 — The Magistrates’ Court here has fined a 33-year-old man in default one week’s jail for shooting a stone at a child using a slingshot.

Magistrate Ashok Linggam convicted Erick Tunggan Lamah, 33, from Sungai Ban, Tanjong Bijat, Sri Aman on his own guilty plea to a charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code read together with Section 511 of the same Code.

The Section provides for up to one year in prison, or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both upon conviction.

According to the facts of the case, Erick admitted attempting to hurt the child by shooting a stone at him with a slingshot at around 4pm on Sept 24 in Kampung Lusut here.

During initial questioning, Erick said he did so because he was upset with the child for allegedly bullying other children when playing.

Erick then shot a stone towards the child to scare him, but did not injure him.

The child’s father witnessed the incident.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohammad Syafiq Samry prosecuted the case, while Erick was not represented by counsel. — The Borneo Post
