Joachim Rønning is setting sail for System, an original horror movie he is writing and directing.
The feature hails from Spooky Pictures and Image Nation Studios, the frequent collaborators behind projects such as this year’s Hokum and festival titles including Casey Affleck’s Company and Guy Nattiv’s The Liberation.
System‘s producers include Weapons‘ Roy Lee and Paranormal Activity‘s Steven Schenider for Spooky, as well as Rønning for his The Saga Company. Image Nation CEO Ben Ross executive produces with Spooky’s Rami Yasin.
The film is in production in London, with both the plot and its cast being kept under wraps.
A slimmed down horror movie is a change of pace for Rønning, who has mostly worked on big franchises in recent years, such as Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019) and last year’s Tron: Ares, the stylish Disney film that cratered at the box office. He also helmed the well regarded 2024 drama Young Woman and the Sea, starring Daisy Ridley.
The Norwegian filmmaker broke out with 2012’s Kon-Tiki, directed with his Pirates collaborator Espen Sandberg and which was nominated for a foreign language Oscar.
UTA Independent Film Group put together the financing and will handle sales on the film. Rønning is repped by UTA and Sloane Offer
