  • My employee demanded a near 50% raise, despite meeting expectations and not exceeding them

I've never heard of anything like this. I know they wanted a salary increase at their annual and I offered 9%. They informed me that they deserve a $41,000 bump.

  • They've only been at the company for 1 year and came to us with only 1 year of experience. As their manager, I can tell you that the work provided does not warrant that. But they're convinced that because they make custom GPTs they have "innovated"

  • and created efficiencies that make them worth the extra pay. When I firmly said no, we will not be able to hit that number, they informed me that they had already forwarded their request to the CEO and would be meeting with them tomorrow to discuss.

  • I think that if we retain this person this will just hang over our heads. I don't think this was very professional and they clearly think they're too big for our small company. In their review they said there was nothing they could improve on, had an excuse

  • for everything, and then made this crazy demand. I feel like they got advice from some hustling podcast or something. I'm just genuinely shocked by it all.

  • The CEO did not take the meeting. However, I now have a meeting on my calendar for Monday with the vague title Team Planning. It includes me, my boss, and the CEO. Also got a share request from my boss and the department head to get access to the employee's peer reviews (where other

  • people on the team also rated him as meeting expectations, not exceeding). Also got a message from the department head asking what the employees current work share is, so I think they're preparing for his exit.

  • I showed all documentation to the CEO and Department Head. They informed the employee that the increase was not happening, but were still willing to retain. Employee is unhappy, said we were unprofessional, didn't appreciate innovation, and he would be gone in a month (but

  • has no current offers so we'll see). Then the employee informed me that this may be partially motivated by his gf being pregnant (news to me) and him now needing to buy a house. We're basically keeping him for now so we don't fall behind while we look for his replacement.
