  • Young man in workwear working at a gas station

A young man works his first day at his new job at the gas station.

  • The two green employees in this story were thrown to the wolves. Neither of them has mastery of their jobs, and their boss refused to come in to help them when everything started going awry.

  • My new job scheduled my 1st day with another green co-worker had us run the gas station, things went sideways because we both didn't know where things were and boss threw a fit because we had to close down for 30 minutes due to an error we couldn't fix.

Yesterday was my first day there, I clock in with my co-worker and 5 minutes into the shift she tells me she has been there for 7 days. So it was just me and her, no manager, no experienced employee in sight.

  • As the shift goes on, we are struggling to keep up with customers and the Shell point card thing because no-one was there to show us how to do it, at some point the pumps di off, no receipts coming and we had

  • like 3 cars that had no receipt (which is first HIGHLY illegal, and second they couldn't pay because we have to SCAN the receipts). I call my "boss" that promptly tells me to "do my job" and call tech support and just gives me

  • Man holding telephone screaming

The boss screams at the brand-new employee to do his job, even though the employee does not yet know how.

  • their number and hangs up. Tech support tells me to close off the shop while I had angry customers that were in a hurry to pay and leave. It took them TWO hours to fix the whole thing, in that time 1 of the 3 customers that couldn't pay LE FT without paying in a manic episode.

  • A man standing in the drivers seat of a truck

An angry gas station customer leaves without paying after waiting hours for the system to get rebooted.

  • After I called my boss back, his first response was "he isn't coming back, we lost the 30 euros AND the customer" and then threw a fit over the phone telling ME that I should have kept him in the shop, like what, smash his window or beat him up to stay???

  • Rest of the shift went OK, he had another OLD employee come in and show US how to close (the dude isn't even working there anymore) and we went home. Today is my day off, and I am hella frustrated I just wanted to share.

  • Am I crazy or overreacting or is this EXTREMELY unprofessional on their end??

  • hammertoes It's a gas station job. And I doubt it gets any better for you there. Just quit.

  • Spaghetti Western2162 This. Whatever they're getting paid it's not worth it. Tell the boss to off and just don't come back

  • Drink_Jimmy OP I will most likely quit as soon as I lock in another job, interviewing and then do just that most likely. Still this situation is a new one to me xd

  • Emotional_Deals If this is your first impression of the workplace, it's worth seriously considering whether you want to stay. Even bad first days usually include some support, this sounds like a pattern, not a oneoff.

  • Their "Looking for staff" poster is worn out from being hung up. constantly, which I should have taken as a sign

  • NoAudiences Honestly the biggest issue here isn't even the mistakes, it's that there was no experienced staff scheduled at all. That alone is a serious operational failure for a place handling money, fuel systems, and customers.

  • Spaghetti Western2162 The 7 day person is probably the most experienced person they have if the boss is that much of a hard

  • Drink_Jimmy OP That's what frustrates me the most, apparently I came in so a guy that's there 3 years could take a day off.

  • 1quirky1 "Nobody wants to work. I pay them well and still get morons." that gas station boss

  • Drunk_Jimmy OP "Why does everyone leave suddenly without giving their two week notice?" - This boss probably

  • Sea-Tea8982 Not sure why you stayed when the chaos started. I wouldn't go back.

  • steveoa3d Are you or your co-worker Class C operator trained? Do you know where the emergency stop is or what to do if the ATG goes into alarm? Scary...

  • Drunk_Jimmy OP No to both questions, we don't even know how to update the prices yet (so we were working with different *higher* prices for like 2 hours until the tech guy updated them by connecting to the manager PC, and selling fuel with different prices is extremely illegal)

  • Hemightbegiant When I was 18, I worked at McDonalds. I got my friend a job. She lasted one night. They tossed a headset on her, on a Friday night, threw her in drive thru and said "Take orders." Zero training. She quit, crying, that night.

  • Ilovefishdix The key is to not care beyond a paycheck. My job is a sh show 90% of the time. Since I don't really care about the job, I just keep on focusing on getting my paycheck and getting home. Some customer didn't get their chips, gas, and soda, who cares? There will be other customers. It's not your fault your employer can't get their sh together. Just get the paycheck. Eventually, you'll find a better job

  • Barbarake If I'm interpreting this correctly, two of three customers actually waited for 2 hours to pay?!!? H I no, I would have been done after 10 minutes. I'd have left a piece of paper with my name and amount owed on it and come back the next day, but no way would I be waiting for 2 hours.

  • Drunk_Jimmy OP They did stay yea, they were two taxi drivers that were friends so they were chilling, and they were very supportive as well.
