Should you get punished at work for speaking your mind?
The answer is obviously no. You should be able to stand up for yourself in a workplace environment without fear of retribution. You don't want to live your life in fear, and you do want to be able to move freely through your workplace without worry that your every move is being monitored. We're all human, and that doesn't stop once we step foot in the office. We're real people with real problems and needs and hopes and dreams. So we need to be treated like that by our managers and higher-ups. They need to remember that we're all real people with real goals and aspirations, and that's a beautiful thing.
The worker in this story didn't have the same luck. They found themselves in a game of office politics that they didn't want to be playing in the first place, and still got the short end of the stick. Either you're a person who plays the game and wants to play the game, or you aren't. And if you're not a game player, then you might have a difficult time in certain corporate structures. Certain workplaces require ruthlessness and politicking, and if you're not going to play that game, then you might end up with nothing to show for it. That's what happened to this worker, who found themselves on the wrong end of a deal.
