Did someone just win a ‘H1’ plate with a RM10.7m bid? RTD keeps everyone guessing

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 21 — A bid of RM10.7 million for the coveted H1 vehicle registration number has raised eyebrows online after bidding for the special H series closed yesterday, although the Road Transport Department (RTD) has yet to confirm the figure.

The amount began circulating on social media yesterday, with several posts showing three different bids for H1 — RM10.7 million, RM666,666 and RM555,777.

According to Berita Harian, RTD is expected to announce the official results today, with bidders to be notified through email and their JPJeBid accounts within 24 hours of the bidding closing, subject to bank transaction processing.

The H series, covering H1 to H9999, was open for bidding from September 16 to 20 and is the final single-letter prefix series to be offered by RTD and the government.

RTD director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, who launched the series on September 14 in conjunction with Malaysia Day, previously said the letter H represents “harmony” and encouraged the public to bid for the numbers.

Before the H series, the highest confirmed the bid was RM1.75 million for FFF 1, won by King of Malaysia Sultan Ibrahim in June 2024 and the highest amount ever paid for a Malaysian vehicle registration number.

So if RTD confirms the H1 result at RM10.777 million, it would be more than six times the amount paid in 2024.

The JPJeBid system — RTD’s online auction platform for vehicle registration numbers — has no maximum bid limit, allowing bidders to offer large sums for registration numbers they consider exclusive or personally significant.

However, only the official JPJeBid result will determine the winning bid, meaning figures displayed during the bidding process or shared on social media may not reflect the final price.
