When did everyone start living to work instead of working to live?
I remember a time when a job was simply a means to an end, where you'd clock in, clock out, and cash in. Life wasn't about your career as much as it was about your hobbies and interests outside of work. Maybe it was the luxury of being a 15-year-old with my first job, but my work money went into a pool that fueled my car, paid for good food, and allowed me to do some fun activities I'd always dreamed of!
Understandably, it's a luxury to have a single cent leftover after paying off all of your bills, but maybe it's time the workforce starts treating themselves a little more kindly with their spare change. You may spend 40 hours per week in the workplace, dragging through company meetings, client conversations, and dreaded department debriefs, but what about the other 128 hours this week?
Since we'll all be working anyway for the rest of our lives, we might as well enjoy life as it is in this present moment, living a little every day to spice up the monotony of employment. Perhaps that means you learn a language on your commute or you pick up a crafty hobby after hours. Maybe you've always wanted to train for a big hike in a nearby National Park, or perhaps you've always wanted to watch The Sopranos all the way through.
Regardless of your motivations, interests, and hobbies in life, be sure to prioritize more than just your career.
Because we never know what every day holds for us and because work is an unavoidable inevitability, we might as well work around it and throw in some tried-and-true good times into the mix.
Live every moment outside of the workplace like you're on vacation, and you'll never run out of PTO again.
