It is commonly argued that many of the most compelling forms of art and entertainment are those that provoke an immediate, visceral response, whether that comes in the form of a painting that makes us stop and stare, or a comedian who drops a punchline that leaves us so stunned we can't help but laugh. While not everything meant to amuse us has a burning need to be shocking, surprise certainly helps in capturing attention.
Meme culture understands this well and frequently leans into edgy territory to encourage our strong reactions and make those memes get shared more widely. Memes are unafraid to raise eyebrows or offend the wrong audience, and there is a certain respect to be found in that boldness. After all, not everything is designed to appeal to everyone, and some content will inevitably not be for us. With any luck, the examples that follow will be interesting in the right way.
